Thanos is one of the most powerful villains in the Marvel Universe and one of The Avengers greatest foes. He is a villain whose physiology brings him to near immortality, able to battle with minimal injury and survive most fatal circumstances. To some degree, Thanos can wield cosmic energy. His near godlike abilities create the desire in him to increase his stature in the universe, no matter the cost. Thanos decides to eliminate half of the universe to impress Mistress Death and win her love. He believed since his soul is of dark nature, he could impress such a powerful entity. When that became a failure over repeated attempts, he was banned from ever entering the realms of the dead. Despite Thanos failure flaw, he is the first villain to conquer the entire universe. Like most villains, his selfish ambition is his greatest downfall, as displayed in the Infinity Gauntlet series. All those who have great power fear to lose it, this fear is what defeats Thanos every time.
He appeared in the 1998 Silver Surfer animated series, The Super Hero Squad Show, Avengers Assemble, and the Guardians of the Galaxy animated series, among other animated productions. Avengers Assemble particularly leaned into Thanos and the Infinity Stones during its second season. Thanos first appears in the mid-credits scene of The Avengers (2012), originally portrayed by Damion Poitier. Later, Josh Brolin then took over the role, appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), the mid-credits scene of Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), and finally becoming the central antagonist of Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019).
Comic fans have speculated on who would be the most dangerous between Apocalypse, Darkseid and Thanos. Apocalypse believes only the strong deserve to survive. He would reshape life. Darkseid wants to take free will itself through the Anti-Life Equation and command it. Thanos has already shown what happens when the Infinity Stones falls into his hands. Three tyrants. Three philosophies. Three different ways of deciding the fate of everyone.
